Mississauga looks to continue post-Hazel renaissance in 2016

MBOT President & CEO David Wojcik was quoted:

“We have 73 Fortune 500 companies that have a presence in Mississauga. And now we’re working with the mayor’s office on her new innovation and entrepreneurship task force” to make Mississauga an even bigger destination for investment and entrepreneurship,” he said.

“It’s all centred around building a community that allows people to be successful in Mississauga.”

Wojcik says his organization and city hall are looking forward to working on major economic development in 2016, particularly because the new federal minister of innovation, science and economic development, Navdeep Bains, is from Mississauga.

“We’re going to see some very interesting innovation in Mississauga.”

The Hon. Charles Sousa, Minister of Finance for the Province of Ontario released his economic outlook and fiscal review on November 26, 2015.  The Minister reported the province had lowered its corporate tax rate so the combined federal-provincial rate is competitive with other jurisdictions, reduced red tape savings of 2.4 million hours for business and continually promotes Ontario business internationally. The Minister reinforced his government’s commitment to innovation. The Minister also confirmed the proposal to remove the Debt Retirement Charge for electricity users by April 1, 2018.

The Minister confirmed the investment of more than $134 billion over 10 years on priorities such as roads, bridges, public transit, hospitals and schools. One interesting point the Minister made was that for every dollar invested in infrastructure, the short term GDP is raised by $1.43 and $3.83 in the long term.

Mayoral candidates responses to MBOT Questionnaire

The Mississauga Board of Trade contacted all 15 City of Mississauga Mayoral candidates to complete a questionnaire based on our Mississauga Works policy agenda. The questionnaire included four key areas of concern: the economy, governance, labour and employment, and infrastructure. These issues were identified by our business community, through surveys and forums, as critical to ensuring the future prosperity of Mississauga. They were asked to share their vision for the community with our membership and the business community at large.
