Mississauga, ON – The U.S. Administration’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian products entering the United States will have far-reaching consequences, both nationwide and here in Mississauga. These tariffs threaten one of the world’s most successful bilateral trading relationships and will significantly disrupt businesses, supply chains, and economic growth on both sides of the border.

Canada and the U.S. share a long-standing history of mutually beneficial trade, a relationship that is now being undermined by escalating tariffs. These measures amount to an unnecessary tax on businesses and consumers in both countries, increasing costs, creating uncertainty, and discouraging investment. Given Mississauga’s deep integration into North American supply chains, the local impact will be particularly significant. Instead of fostering economic momentum, these tariffs risk stalling growth and, in some cases, reversing progress.

The economic damage will not be confined to Canada—U.S. communities, large and small, will also feel the effects. At the Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT), we remain steadfast in advocating for the vital contributions of our business community, not just in Mississauga, but across Canada, the U.S., and around the world.

Now more than ever, Canada and Mississauga must leverage our strong economic footprint to defend and preserve our highly integrated trade relationship with the U.S. while simultaneously pursuing opportunities in global markets where we hold a competitive advantage.

MBOT will continue to stand with our business members, providing the resources, advocacy, and support needed to navigate these challenges and ensure that Mississauga’s economy remains strong and resilient.
