CANADA NEWS RELEASE: Canada and Mississauga Invest in Active Transportation Infrastructure

Fares Al Soud, Member of Parliament for Mississauga Centre and Iqra Khalid, Member of Parliament for Mississauga—Erin Mills; joined Mississauga Councillors Joe Horneck, Ward 6; and Stephen Dasko, Ward 1; to announce joint investments in two active transportation projects.

The Culham Trail is a key connector in Mississauga, helping to move more than 500,000 people annually. However, it has suffered severe flood damage, resulting in some portions being closed since 2024. The federal government’s investment will help to reconstruct nearly four kilometres of multi-use path recreational trail as well as assist in elevating the pathway to prevent future flooding. Additional enhancements will include amenities like new seating and overlook viewing areas, implementation of a bike share system, upgraded signage, and landscaping.

North of Lakeshore Road, a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge will be constructed. Spanning approximately 65 metres, the Port Credit Active Transportation Bridge will improve connectivity across the Credit River by linking Port Credit and its GO station to the Mineola West neighbourhood. The bridge deck will provide a comfortable, safe and accessible route for people to walk or ride a bike, while being completely separated from motor vehicle traffic.

Active transportation infrastructure like trails and bridges are a convenient and accessible way for residents to get around. By supporting Canadians to walk, run, bike, or roll, we are building strong, vibrant and healthy communities.

• The federal government is investing $8,763,420 in two projects through the Active Transportation Fund (ATF).
• These investments build on another Active Transportation Fund investment announced in 2023 that will extend the Trans Canada Trail through Lakeview Village.
• The ATF supports projects that build new and expanded networks of pathways, sidewalks, bike lanes and trails to support affordable, greener, and healthier options for Canadians to access their communities by walking, cycling, and through the use of human-powered or hybrid mobility aids such as wheelchairs, scooters, e-bikes, rollerblades, snowshoes, cross-country skis, and more.
• A minimum of 10% of ATF’s funding is allocated to projects that benefit Indigenous populations and communities.
• The ATF supports the National Active Transportation Strategy, the country’s first strategic approach for promoting active transportation and its benefits. It uses data-driven and evidence-based investments to build new and expanded active transportation networks, while supporting equitable and sustainable travel options.
• The federal government also launched the Active Transportation Online Hub. This webpage provides resources related to active transportation, such as data and research, policies, success stories on projects across Canada, and information on the federal government’s active transportation investments.
• The Government of Canada is taking concrete actions to strengthen the economy by investing in Canadians and supporting Canadian businesses.
• Federal actions are creating good jobs, accelerating home building and helping communities grow across the country.
• Federal funding is conditional on fulfilling all requirements related to consultation with Indigenous groups.
• Federal funding is conditional on the signing of the contribution agreements for these two projects.
